浪人柴左近（丹波哲郎 饰）在旅行途中，音无偶然遭遇了三个恐慌的农民。他们不堪忍受地方长官松下宇左卫门（石黒達也 饰）的剥削与暴政，音无于是铤而走险，绑架了松下的女儿亚矢（桑野みゆき 饰）作为人质。左近深知农民们的做法何其危险，于是假意休息留了下来，并且击退了官兵的首次围捕。松下大怒，聚集了包括樱京十郎（長門勇 饰）和桔梗锐之介（平幹二朗 饰）在内的一众浪人前去营救，谁知京十郎与锐之介深解农民的苦衷，临阵倒戈站在了左近一方。不久，松下又绑架了其中一名农户的女儿作要挟，左近不愿看到女孩受到伤害，情愿用自己的肉体苦痛换来农民的安全。但是他所面对的却是一个言而无信的无耻之徒……

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
