《护工故事》讲述了一位退休作家（保罗·路德饰演）在经历了自己的人生悲剧后成为了一名护工，中文字幕经过六周的培训后他见到了他的第一位客户——一个满嘴脏话的18岁肌肉萎缩症青年（克雷格·罗伯茨饰演）。“瘫痪”的情感和瘫痪的身体不期而遇，中文字幕二人开始了一段说走就走的公路旅行。一路上他们遇到了能说会道的失足少女、帮助他们测试个人生存技能的孕妇等等，一系列故事之后他们明白了在人生失意时保持希望的重要性，同时也收获了真正的友谊。
