风起云涌的20世纪初，一切都是未知，但时代已无法阻止新思潮的来临。时任湖南第一师范校长的孔昭绶要请到了杨昌济来校任教。一批学贯中西的老师的来临，让湖南师范成为了许多有志青年向往的地方。前来就读的包括了蔡和森（徐亮 饰）、萧子升（钱枫 饰）和年少的毛泽东（谷智鑫 饰）等人。在这里，他们开始了五年的校园生活。读书期间，毛泽东逐渐成为了一个教育救国论的信仰者。有想法不拘束的他成为了学校格外关照的“特殊学生”。在这当中，毛泽东加深了和蔡和森、萧子升及周南女子中学的陶斯咏（练束梅 饰）、杨开慧（钱芳 饰）等人的友谊。而处于动荡时代的中国，学校也无法独善其身。一系列的事件让这群少年们对人生、对社会、对祖国都有了新的认识和想法，而他们则是未来祖国的建设者……
