故事根据民间传说“钟馗伏妖”故事改编。每逢千年便有日食天象，永别届时更是昆仑山灵力最弱，永别阴气最盛之时。此时，昆仑山魔井开启，魔能涌出，万妖出动。妖魔或附身于常人，夜间吸食人类阳气，被侵蚀的人们诡异而凶残；或化为人形捕食人类。恐怖灵异事件不断，你我之间难分人妖，人间如地狱般阴郁恐怖。终南山进士钟馗不惧邪祟，与师傅一起斩妖除魔，却发现在妖身后，还有更惊人、更令人恐惧、更令他难以抉择的真相在等待着他……

Discovered after the war, the unfinished work, with no soundtrack, quickly became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record, despite its elaborate propagandistic construction. The later discovery of a long-missing reel complicated earlier readings, showing the manipulations of camera crews in these "everyday" scenes. Well-heeled Jews attending elegant dinners and theatricals (while callously stepping over the dead bodies of compatriots) now appeared as unwilling, but complicit, actors, alternately fearful and in denial of their looming fate. ——Written by Sundance Film Festival
