回复 :明朝无锡县县令之女王怜娟是个聪明、美丽的姑娘，因生母早亡，继母心肠歹毒，她终日闷闷不乐。贴身丫环小玲对她体贴入微，两人情同姐妹。这一天夜晚，怜娟在后花园焚香抚琴，抒发愁怀。浮浪成性的纨绔子弟、苏州知府之子张青云从墙外经过，偷听到王小姐在里面弹琴，翻墙潜入花园。他见怜娟生得如此美貌，顿生爱心，怜娟与张公子相识后，一颗缺少温暖的心也得到了不少安慰。于是他们常常在夜晚的后花园幽会。苏州知府为了攀附当朝一品天官，千方百计地为儿子和天官之女蒋素琴订了终身。他写信给正在无锡读书的儿子张青云，谎称自己病重，令其速归。青云接信后，当天夜晚又来以后花园向怜娟告别。面对依依不舍的王小姐，他发誓回苏州后一定禀明父母，早日前来迎娶。善良的怜娟出于对他的真情，在这一晚许身于他。万万没有想到，这位张公子一去几个月没有回音，不幸怜娟已经怀孕。这件事被父母得知后，先是迁怒于丫环小玲，将其逐出府门。继母又调唆县令逼迫女儿投湖自尽。怜娟在绝望中遵从父命，跳进湖中，巧遇一个打鱼的老妈妈相救。老人对姑娘的悲惨经历深表同情，决定陪同姑娘一起去苏州寻访张公子。路上又与丫环小玲相遇，主仆二人沿途乞讨，好不容易来到苏州城。她们住在小店里度日如年，但等待她们的不是和张公子团聚如初，而是变了心的情人设下的阴谋。张青云不仅不念旧情，而且为了陷瞒真相，先是指使人割下了小玲的舌头，继而又买通药房要毒死怜娟。张青云贤惠明理的夫人蒋素琴早已对丈夫的放荡深为不满，得知此事后，极力劝阻。怜娟虽然幸免其害，但在巨大的打击之下，已失去了生活下去的勇气。在孤苦无望的境遇中她生下一子后更是病弱不堪。秉公执法的天官不循私情，亲手将女婿张青云判为死刑。就在张公子被押赴刑场的同时，王怜娟也在贫病交加中悲愤地离开了人世，善良的蒋素琴收留了她的遗孤。

回复 :The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years.At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with.But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood.I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.
