舞台剧演员家福（60岁左右）明明知道同为演员的妻子和同剧男演员定期幽会，不毕却假装不知，不毕在世人面前扮演着恩爱夫妻。妻子去世后，他雇佣了一位女性司机渡利。相处中，他开始逐渐和渡利交流自己的内心世界，追问是否去世的妻子非和“那个男人”保持关系不可。

回复 :重阳节，琼台书院学生张逸民与镇台府丫环翠莲相识。镇台夫人认为翠莲在外面有私情，翠莲死不招认。道台要纳翠莲为妾，翠莲得知后，女扮男装逃出镇台府。琼台书院掌教老师谢宝带翠莲到书院，与张逸民相见。翠莲愿与张逸民回乡同甘共苦。镇台带兵丁包围书院，张逸民向谢宝说出实情，谢宝决定成全他俩。谢宝以书院是道台所辖为由，拒绝镇台搜查。镇台叫谢宝同去见道台。谢宝把翠莲藏在轿内，走到半路，谢宝下轿步行，待镇台和谢宝走远，轿夫放出翠莲，与张逸民远走高飞。
