当田桂（黄小雷 饰）知道自己竟不是母亲田秋月（吴文华 饰）的亲生儿子，欧美追问原由，欧美他百感交集。早年参加革命的匡华（王进 饰）、廖一萍（黄锦棠 饰）夫妇寻子数年，终于打听到了田桂的下落。田秋月忍痛推迟田桂与养女翠翠（任冶湘 饰）的婚期，带儿子去见现已身居要职的匡华、廖一萍夫妇。认亲后，廖想用自己优越的政治地位和经济条件留下儿子，并试图割断他与养母和翠翠的联系。安排儿子结识部长的女儿，但田桂日思夜想乡间的养母和翠翠，廖闻大光其火。出差回家的匡华察觉原委，严厉批评了妻子，并让田桂接秋月母女进城同住，廖却只同意翠翠上门，而不同意秋月进城。善良的秋月送田桂和翠翠来到匡家，不经意发现廖一萍竟是当年自己舍身救下的姐妹......
