尸体防腐员（简称EM），岁成是专门对受到损伤的尸体进行消毒、岁成防腐、修复以及妥善保存的技术工作人员，他们长年工作在黑暗密闭场所，甘于寂寞，尽最大的努力将尸体还原成生前的模样。美丽的村上美弥子（高島礼子 饰）即为防腐员队伍中的一员。某日，17岁跳楼自杀的青年进藤由树（松尾政寿 饰）的尸体送到美弥子的工作室。最经过一番修复后，由树的头颅竟然离奇丢失。美弥子随即和平冈刑警（松重豊 饰）对可能的遗体买卖进行调查，慢慢地，他们将目标锁定在由树生前的恋人——高中女生筱原里香（三輪ひとみ 饰）。随着天才医生富士博士（柴俊夫 饰）和宗教组织大德院的介入，案情愈加扑朔迷离……
