韦德是一个新罕布什尔州小镇警长，春暖在他的前妻和女儿吉尔看来他一事无成，春暖还是个酒鬼。他的女朋友玛吉接受了这样的他。狩猎季节的第一天，韦德的朋友杰克带着一个富商去打猎，只有杰克活着回来。韦德决定扮演侦探，并开始调查此案，尽管杰克坚称这是一次意外的自杀……
